Body as a Small Cosmos

A sequence from Donguibogam becomes a question about how knowledge moves through a living body.

ORIGINAL RECORD · EDITED

In 2024, I taught a programme called Experience Donguibogam with the Body at Namsangol Hanok Village. One sequence of words stayed with me: spring, east, wind, sourness, liver, eyes, muscles, nails, anger. Each word pointed beyond itself, toward a web of relations between the body, season, sensation, and place.

I returned to that sequence as an artist. How does knowledge held in a text become knowledge tested through a living body? What changes when a person attends to the season and to their own movement at the same time? The body appears here as a small cosmos: porous to its surroundings, shaped by rhythm, and never entirely separate from other lives.

This question continues in Moumdasreum, my long-term embodied research. I work with breath, movement, notes, and images to carry fragments of Korean body-cosmology into the present. The archive is made through repeated attention. Each return to the body changes what can be remembered and what can be seen.
